5 kW Solar System Price in Pakistan: On-Grid vs Hybrid, Line by Line

What a 5 kW solar system costs in Pakistan today, from live dealer prices: panels, inverter, structure and labour, the on-grid vs hybrid difference, batteries, payback under net billing, and what quotes leave out.

5 kW is the size most Pakistani homes ask about first. It fits a typical 5 marla roof, it can carry a couple of inverter ACs during the day, and it's big enough to make a real dent in a summer bill. The trouble is that "5 kW system price" can mean very different things depending on who's quoting: with or without batteries, a low frame or a raised structure, a named inverter or a no-name one. This guide breaks a 5 kW system into its parts, with today's prices pulled automatically from the dealer listings we track.

The short answer

A complete 5 kW on-grid system (panels, inverter, structure, wiring and labour, no batteries) currently works out at about Rs 402,007 – 567,901. That's an estimate built from real panel and inverter listings plus a stated allowance for installation, not a quote. The live version, updated daily, is on our 5 kW system price page.

A hybrid system with batteries costs more, mainly because of the batteries. We cover that below.

What's inside a 5 kW system

Panels

A 5 kW system needs about 9 × 585 W panels. Modern panels currently sell at Rs 37.5–41.7 per watt, so the panels for a 5 kW system come to roughly Rs 197,438 – 219,551.

Panels are the easiest part to compare because they're sold per watt. When you get a quote, divide the panel line by the total watts. If it's far above the market rate, ask why. If it's far below, check the panels are genuine before you pay. Our guide on how to check original solar panels shows how. Live rates by brand are on the panel price page.

Inverter

Installers usually pair 5 kW of panels with an inverter of about 5 to 6 kW. Our estimate uses real listings rated close to 5 kW, which currently come to Rs 109,799 – 190,400. That's a wide range because it mixes on-grid and hybrid models and budget and premium brands. For a 6 kW unit specifically:

Structure, wiring and labour

This covers the mounting frame, DC and AC cables, breakers, surge protection, earthing and the installation itself. We don't scrape these prices because they depend so much on your roof, so we use a planning allowance of Rs 18–30 per watt. For 5 kW that's about Rs 94,770 – 157,950.

This is the line where quotes differ most, and where corners get cut. A cheap quote often means thinner structure channels, undersized cables or missing protection. Our quotation checklist lists what each of these lines should say.

On-grid or hybrid?

On-grid is the cheapest way to cut your bill. Solar powers the house in the daytime and extra units go to the grid under net billing. The catch is that an on-grid inverter switches off when the grid goes down, so you get no power during load-shedding.

Hybrid adds batteries, so the system keeps running during outages and can store daytime solar for the evening. Under net billing that matters more than it used to: exported units earn only about Rs 8.13 each, so using your own solar in the evening is usually worth more than selling it. Our guide to net metering vs net billing explains why.

What batteries add

The common building block is a 51.2 V 100 Ah lithium (LiFePO4) battery of about 5 kWh. One currently lists at Rs 224,200 – 260,000, and two at Rs 448,400 – 520,000.

One battery gives about 4.6 kWh of usable storage. Allowing for losses, that runs a steady 500 W load (fans, lights, a fridge and the router) for around 8 hours, which covers most load-shedding blocks. It won't run an AC through the night. Many people start with one battery and add another later, so check the inverter supports adding batteries before you buy. If you're weighing lithium against cheaper lead-acid, see lithium vs tubular battery.

So a rough 5 kW hybrid budget is the on-grid total above, plus the extra for a hybrid inverter, plus the batteries you choose.

Is 5 kW the right size for you?

A 5 kW system makes about 540 units a month on average, using 3.6 units per kW per day. Summer output is higher and winter output lower. As a rough guide, it suits a home using around that many units a month, or one that wants to run two 1.5-ton inverter ACs in the daytime.

You'll also need around 28 square metres (about 300 sq ft) of roof that's free of shade for most of the day. Water tanks, stair rooms and a neighbour's taller building all count.

Two better ways to size it than a rule of thumb:

If you're between sizes, compare the 3 kW, 6 kW and 10 kW pages.

Savings and payback

At today's mid price, our estimate for a well-sized 5 kW on-grid system is a saving of about Rs 13,609 a month, which pays back the system in ~3.0 years.

That figure assumes about 60% of what you generate is used in your home during the day, with the rest exported at the net billing rate. A house that's empty in the daytime will export more and take longer to pay back. A hybrid system costs more upfront but lets you use more of your own solar, so its payback depends heavily on how much you'd otherwise lose to load-shedding or export.

What a 5 kW price usually leaves out

Check whether your quote includes these, because our estimate doesn't:

  • Batteries, covered above.
  • Elevated structures. A raised frame you can walk or park under costs much more than a standard frame, depending on height, steel and spans. We don't have reliable market data for these yet, so ask each installer to price the structure as a separate line.
  • Net billing fees and the green meter. Applying for net billing involves DISCO fees and a bidirectional meter. Ask who handles the paperwork and whether it's in the price.
  • Your connection. Most 5 kW homes are on single-phase, and a single-phase inverter is the normal choice. If you have a three-phase connection, ask the installer how they'll connect the inverter and whether a three-phase model suits you better. Also confirm your sanctioned load can accommodate the system.
